An Alliance for
Accelerated Change
Sustainable food systems for the new decade Annual Report 2019

Foreword

Bringing together two world-class research-for-development CGIAR Centers is a major undertaking. However, the primary challenge is not implementing novel and efficient operations. It is doing justice to the Centers’ collective century-long research history, and charting a high-impact, coherent and globally relevant research agenda that capitalizes on the expertise of both.

Research Highlights

Our scientists have been conducting cutting-edge research at the nexus of agriculture, nutrition and environment for decades. Last year, widespread recognition of the climate crisis and threats to biodiversity made this work more relevant than ever before. Read on for examples of solutions and success stories from our scientists in 2019.

One CGIAR

In late 2019, CGIAR introduced One CGIAR, an ambitious reformulation of CGIAR’s partnerships, knowledge, assets and global presence, aiming for greater integration in the face of the interdependent challenges facing today’s world.

Total budget

In 2019, we took the first steps toward aligning our financial operations to move forward as the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT. By combining our efforts, we managed to implement USD 114.5MM on four continents.

Our Partners

The complexity and size of the global challenges that we are facing mean that we cannot tackle them alone. We work with a wide range of funding and research partners who share our mission to deliver research-based solutions that harness agricultural biodiversity and sustainably transform food systems to improve people’s lives in a climate crisis.
